Saving energy
Energy efficiency is one of the largest and lowest cost ways to extend our world's energy supplies and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In our own operations, we focus on flare reduction, cogeneration of power and steam, and improving energy efficiency as the key levers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Producing fuel and petrochemicals requires significant amounts of energy. In 2010, our operations consumed approximately 1.47 billion gigajoules of energy.
In 2010, our upstream flaring — burning of gases for safety or disposal — averaged 350 million cubic feet per day, a reduction of more than 20 percent from 2009 and nearly 60 percent from 2006.
Cogeneration is the simultaneous production of electricity to power our operations while capturing useful heat or steam for industrial processes — we have interests in about 4900 megawatts of cogeneration capacity around the world.
ExxonMobil is a leader in the development and use of component technologies essential for carbon capture and storage (CCS), which we have focused on in our oil and gas operations for many years.
ExxonMobil is investing more than $100 million in a test facility to develop a technology to make carbon capture and storage less expensive.
